The Fight Against Cancer

Those of you who know me probably know that I've been a supporter of cancer research for the past few years. This desire was reinforced by the death of a friend and co-worker in 2007. Since then, I have been doing what little bit I can to help in the fight against cancer, including donating computer time and money.

One of the ways we can all help is to support people like Douglas Craig, who is taking time out of his life to walk across the United States to raise money for cancer research. I applaud his efforts, and encourage anyone who is able to donate to his worthy cause.

You can find more information on his web site:

Double Standard?

I was reading the open letter from Steve Jobs explaining why Apple won't let Flash or Flash-derived applications onto the iPhone and read a paragraph that I found quite interesting.

Under the heading "Sixth, the most important reason", the second paragraph reads as follows:

"We know from painful experience that letting a third party layer of software come between the platform and the developer ultimately results in sub-standard apps and hinders the enhancement and progress of the platform. If developers grow dependent on third party development libraries and tools, they can only take advantage of platform enhancements if and when the third party chooses to adopt the new features. We cannot be at the mercy of a third party deciding if and when they will make our enhancements available to our developers."

I find it curious that Mr. Jobs decries third party software that prevents developers from being able to take advantage of platform enhancements. He even goes so far as to say that Apple "cannot be at the mercy" of these third parties. However, if memory serves, doesn't AT&T, a third party the last time I checked, cause a similar situation to exist for iPhone users?

Specifically, aren't there "enhancements" that Apple has made to the iPhone that AT&T has not made "available" to the end users (tethering and MMS) until a much later date? Or does Mr. Job's commentary only apply to developers?

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but it seems to me that the "most important reason" why Flash isn't allowed on the iPhone is something that AT&T, the iPhone's exclusive carrier, is equally guilty of perpetuating.

72 Pounds in 10 Months

Since being diagnosed with diabetes back on June 26, 2009, I've been on a diet. Those of you who know me well know that this is not the first time I've lost weight. In fact, it's the third time that I've lost (or tried to lose) a significant amount of weight (90+ pounds). I'm pretty sure that this will be the last one I have in me, so I really need this one to stick. Between the twin incentives of the diabetes and the birth of my first child, I think I can do it.

As of yesterday, my 10 month diet anniversary, I'm down 72 pounds. I'm "officially" trying to lose an additional 24 pounds, but I'd actually prefer to lose more like 30. It's been a long road, and the holiday's certainly didn't help, but having Zoe has definitely increased the amount of physical work I do at home.

I'm hopeful that I can hit my goal by my 1 year mark (coincidentally, the day after my next birthday), but if not by then, then I'll settle for a month or two later. I'll post again when I do reach the goal.

My New Toy

This past weekend, Mindy finally broke down and let me get my new toy. Since moving to Texas, I've been driving to work every day. This prompted me to want a new vehicle, specifically one that is designed for commuting.

So, I am now the proud owner of a 2010 Honda Fit:

We finally hit our 2 year mark on our Verizon phones, and we decided to upgrade from "dumb" phones to smartphones. Our new Droids showed up yesterday, and we've been playing with them ever since.
I've decided to run a separate blog about the fun I'm having with my Droid. You can find that blog here:

Facebook Schmacebook

Since I just don't spend any time on Facebook, and since I have tons of people who send me requests to join their team/guild/group/club/etc that I never even read, I decided that the best option at this point is just to drop off Facebook for a while. As a result of this decision, I canceled my Facebook account over the past weekend.

I may one day rejoin the fray, but I've decided that I just don't have the time or inclination to be a "good" Facebook member. Besides, anyone who wants to know more about what's going on in my world can always look here to find out. And if my family or friends have something important to tell me, they know how to contact me.

You mean the Government wants me to lie on the Census form?

Okay, so I got my 2010 Census form in the mail today, and since I like to be a law-abiding good citizen, I opened it up and read it. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get past the very first paragraph where it tells me to lie on the form.

Allow me to elaborate...

In a letter dated March 15, 2010, it states the following: "Please complete and mail back the enclosed census form today" (emphasis in original).

Here is a scan of this portion of the letter, in case you think I might have misread it (red lines added).

Now, here is where I have the issue with sending the form back "today" (please note, I did receive it on March 15, 2010, the date of the letter itself).

On the census form itself, it very clearly states that the form is to count "every person living in the United States on April 1, 2010" (emphasis added). It then goes on to state the conditions under which a person who normally lives in the house, apartment, or mobile home would NOT be counted, including if they are in jail or prison ON April 1, 2010.

Here, again, is a scan of this portion of the form, in case you think I might have misread it (red lines added).

So, the cover letter is telling me that I am either supposed to accurately predict the future, and note how many people are going to live at my house on April 1, 2010, or I am supposed to lie about it. Some of you may say that I am just reaching for things to complain about, but please understand that my wife is 8 months pregnant. We could have our baby any day now, including before April 1, 2010.

As a result, I am forced to either ignore their request and wait until April 1, 2010 to fill out and return my census form, or I am supposed to lie to the government about how many people live at my house by returning the form now.

My Family Picture

When we were visiting my family in Utah over Christmas, my nephew Spencer drew us a picture. He is 5 years old, and this is one of the best pictures I've ever appeared in. For reference, the picture contains Steve, Mindy, Hope the dog, and Spencer himself.
